Baseball Takes Day Two Doubleheader for Series Sweep

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls completed the series sweep against Crowley's Ridge College, defeating the Pioneers 2-1 and 8-5 in their second doubleheader of the weekend.

After finding itself down at the beginning of each competition, W baseball battled back for both victories. "That was two very fun come from behind wins for the guys today to sweep the series," said head coach Matthew Wolfenbarger of the Owls success. "Once again we had good pitching from Logan Suggs and Brady Jones in game one and game two and the bats just found a way to do it for us, especially in game two, when Dane Bevell came through with a pinch-hit single to tie the game late! These guys just don't give up!"

Game 1 (W 2-1)

Logan Suggs pitched the entire game for the Owls, to receive his third win of the season. During his time on the mound, Suggs allowed one earned run, no walks, with 11 strikeouts.
The Pioneers started off strong, offensively, scoring their first and only run in the top of the first inning on one hit and one error.

The Owls defense held but action at the plate lagged until the sixth inning. At its final at-bat, The W added two runs to the scoreboard on two hits and two errors for its first victory of the day.

Offensively, Hunter Harper led the Owls with three at-bats for two hits and one RBI. Joel Estabrook recorded the other RBI, while Trey Petite and Heath Ford were credited with one run each.

Game 2 (W 8-5)

Starting game two, Brady Jones took the Owls mound for five innings, seeing seven hits against, four earned runs, one walk, and six strikeouts.

Despite performing well defensively, the Owls bats were just about silent throughout the first part of the competition. Kyle Shepherd took over pitching duties in the sixth for his second win on the mound. He threw one inning for three hits against and one unearned run.

Drew Williams came in as the closer and was credited with the save. He pitched one inning.

The Pioneers bats were hot early in game two, scoring three runs on four hits and an error in the top of the second inning. They added a fourth run in the fifth and an additional run in the seventh for five runs total.

The Owls made it to the bases several times throughout the first four innings of the competition, but it was not until the bottom of the fifth that they were finally able to score. The W put up two runs in that inning and added a game-winning six during their last at-bat.

Heath Ford led the offense with a 1-for-3 appearance with two RBIs and one run. Dane Bevel came in as a pinch hitter to assist in the effort, going 1-for1, also for two RBIs. Other standouts were Trey Petite, Blake Estabrook, Damain Benefield, and Hunter Harper who recorded one RBI each.

The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday, March 23 when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for a midweek doubleheader at Stillman College. This first pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
