Box Score DUBOIS, Pa. – The Owls baseball team defeats Bryant & Stratton College – Albany on Monday, May 17, in the first round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series. The No. 3 seed The W brought down the No. 6 seed Bobcats 4-3 with a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Owls (21-9) played well defensively, turning the program's first triple play in the top of the third inning to close the side.
"The guys did a phenomenal job today against an excellent team," said head coach Matthew Wolfenbarger. "We had great pitching from
Logan Suggs,
Tyler Temple, and
David Standifer. Our offense played well, getting some big hits when we needed it. The defense was good as well, and we even turned a triple play which was pretty cool."
"I know one thing," Wolfenbarger continued. "This is an experienced group that has played from behind before, and it really showed. These guys never give up!"
Starting pitcher
Logan Suggs took 5.0 inning-stay on the mound to record four strikeouts with three earned runs.
Tyler Temple entered the game in relief in the sixth to pitch 1.1 innings for one strikeout, but senior pitcher
David Standifer closed the game for the win with 0.2 innings thrown and two strikeouts.
At the plate, USCAA First Team All American
Trey Petite led the offensive effort with two hits (one double) on four appearances. The Loxley, Ala. native accounted for two of the Owls four runs.
Heath Ford,
Damain Benefield,
Hunter Harper, and
Dane Bevell recorded one RBI each, while
Blake Estabrook and
John Mcgee made it across home plate to round out The W's scoring.
Owls baseball will be back in action on Tuesday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. ET/ 2:00 p.m. CT for round two of the SCWS. The W will take on the Penn State – DuBois and Mid Atlantic Christian University match-up winner.
