Owls offensive juggernaut continues in 6-0 win

Box Score EUREKA, Ill. – For the second-consecutive day, the Men's Soccer team from the Mississippi University for Women posted a big offensive number, pitching a shutout at Eureka College, 6-0. The Owls (2-1) also topped the Red, Devils (0-2) on McKinzie Field on Thursday by a 5-2 margin, outscoring the hosts 11-2 on the two-game road trip.

Owls goalkeeper David McCutchen (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) faced only two shots-on-goal in the match, both of which he saved to preserve his team's first shutout of 2021. McCutchen also earned the win on Thursday.

The W defensive half, anchored by sophomore Jacob Vickers (Biloxi, Miss./Biloxi HS/East Central CC) and junior Dorian Winters (Jackson, Miss./Terry HS/Southwest CC) in the middle and junior Kai VanCourt (Long Beach, Miss./Long Beach HS/East Central CC) and senior Kyle Rodriguez (Columbus, Miss./Columbus HS) on the outsides, helped extinguish the Red Devils' offensive attack.

Friday's result was never much in doubt, as The W out-shot Eureka by a 27-6 margin, putting a total of 13 attempts on-goal. EC keeper Isaac Hughes had seven saves.

The Owls built a 2-0 halftime lead. Junior Pedro Santana (Sao Paulo, Brazil/DeSoto Central HS/Bacone College) tallied just 8:07 minutes into the match. That was followed by a Vini Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil)-to-Josh Martin (Memphis, Tenn./Pass Christian HS) goal in the 27th minute.

MUW pulled off the bandage in the second half of play, netting four goals in the final 45 minutes alone. In the 56th minute, Lopes notched his fourth goal of the trip, assisted by Martin, to give The W a 3-0 cushion.

Senior Asahel Salgado (Dallas, Texas/Bryan Adams HS/U of the Ozarks) and junior Stephon Walker Jackson, Miss./Terry HS/Jackson State) lit up the board in close proximity, scoring in the 73rd and 76th minutes. Paulo Carneiro's (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) 81st minute goal made it the 6-0 final.

"We played a complete game today, a full 90 minutes, from start to finish," The W Head Coach Louis Alexander said. "It's always hard to go on the road and win, let alone nine hours away from home and to win two games. I couldn't be happier. Lots of different guys are finding ways to score, which is always nice to see. More importantly, we kept a clean sheet.

The W will next be in action on Tuesday (Sept. 14/3 p.m.) when it travels to Delta State in Cleveland, Miss.
