Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – What was the most successful season in Mississippi University for Women volleyball team's modern era came to an end in the elimination bracket of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) championships. The No. 4-seeded Owls (8-17) fell to Carlow University (12-14) in a marathon elimination bracket contest, 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-25, 13-15).
This was MUW's first-ever USCAA championship tournament appearance.
The W dropped the opening set, 25-23, after leading by as many as five points at 20-15 and eliciting a Carlow timeout. The Celtics came out of the stoppage and out-scored the Owls, 7-2, to tie the set at 22-22. An Owls sideout put them up 23-22, but CU would tally the final three points for the win.
Set two was tight early on, with the Celtics grabbing a 13-10 lead. MUW begn chipping away adt the deficit, catching Carlow at 15-15. A sideout at 16-16 put the Owls ahead by one before
Maggie Griggs served up an ace, followed by a great dig save from
Maddy Suggs that swung the momentum in The W's favor the rest of the way. Up 23-18,
Hannah Duran served out the final three points to level the match at 1-1.
The third set swayed back-and-forth with leads of no more than three points in the beginning. A 9-9 deadlock was broken on an Owls' sideout, 10-9, for the lead it would never relinquish. Duran served three winners to create some distance and Suggs served four winning points to make it 19-13, on the way to the 25-18 set win and a 2-1 margin in the match.
With its back to the wall, Carlow dominated the fourth set, 25-15, to force the fifth and deciding set.
MUW looked to be in control, ahead 13-9. But following a Celtics timeout, Carlow went on a 6-0 run to close out the match and end the Owls banner season.
