Box Score 2 SHREVEPORT, La. – The Mississippi University for Women's softball team lost a doubleheader to Centenary College on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (9-11) dropped the opener, 3-0, and lost the second contest, 4-3, in a walk-off by the Ladies (6-10) at the Centenary Softball Complex.
In the first bout of the day, CC scored one in the first and two in the third inning, and that proved to be enough for the hosts. Ironically, The W out-hit the ladies, 8-5, in the game. However, Centenary capitalized on Owls' errors, as all three scores were unearned runs.
Riley Phillips, a junior from Gardendale, Ala., had a good start to what proved to be a great afternoon for the Owls' secondbaseman. In game one, Phillips was 2-for-4.
Freshman firstbaseman
Anna Sandlin (Sulligent, Ala.) also had a pair of hits, going 2-for-3. Freshman designated player
Rylie Grisham was 1-for-3 with a double.
Kaitlyn Parrish, a senior right-handed pitcher, absorbed the loss despite a decent effort in the circle. She went 6.0 innings and scattered five hits, but was the victim of the three unearned runs by the Ladies.
In the second game of the day, Phillips played a part in all three of the Owls' runs. In the top of the first inning, Phillips doubled and the next batter- Grisham – slapped a run-scoring single as the guests jumped ahead early.
After Centenary tied it in the second, Phillips put her team on top once again by crushing a two-run homer – her second of the year - to center, that made it 3-1 in favor of The W.
Centenary knotted the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in their half of the third. That score stood until the bottom of the seventh. A pair of Owls' fielding errors set up the walk-off single by the Ladies to complete the sweep.
Grisham was the tough-luck loser, tossing 2.1 innings of four-hit relief. She struck out two and walked one.
Phillips was 2-for-3 in the game and 4-for-7 for the afternoon. She scored two runs and drove in two more.
The top five in The W batting order had all six of the team's hits in game two. In addition to Phillips (2-3) in the leadoff slot,
Ashton Farnell, Grisham,
Megan Cummins and
Kaylee Quimby all had one hit apiece in the Nos. 2-5 spots, respectively.
