Box Score 4 LaGRANGE, Ga. – The Mississippi University for Women softball team spent the weekend facing down a pair of opponents on the road from the USA South Athletic Conference (West Division): Huntingdon College and LaGrange College, going 1-3 on the trip.
On Friday, the Owls traveled to Montgomery, Ala., to face Huntingdon – which has the most wins among any USA South team from either division – and came out on the short end of a pair of 8-0 losses to the Hawks. On Saturday, MUW split a doubleheader at LaGrange, Ga., losing game one, 9-8, and rebounding to win game two, 3-2.
The W offense had a tough day against Huntingdon, mustering a total of seven hits between the two games. In the opener,
Kaylee Quimby went 1-for-2, with a walk.
Jessica Deming,
Katelyn Hicks and
Rylie Grisham each had a hit, as well.
Kaitlyn Parrish took the loss. Parrish went 4.0 innings, gave up nine hits and was saddled with six earned runs.
In the second contest versus the Hawks,
Anna Sandlin (2-2) had two of her team's three hits.
Maddy Suggs (1-2) had the other hit.
Senior pitcher
Amelia Stalter went 3.1 innings, permitting five hits and five earned runs before being lifted.
In the first game at LaGrange, the Owls lost a gut-wrenching decision to the Panthers. Leading 8-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Parrish retired the first two batters. But that's when the bottom fell out of things for The W.
Versus Parrish (2-4) - and two other Owls' pitchers in the frame - the Panthers would amass six hits (of their 13 for the game), two walks and two hit batters, all while down to their final out. When the dust settled, the result was a seven-run inning and a walk-off win for the hosts.
The top two batters in the order – Deming (2-4) and Quimby (3-4) – had five of their team's 10 hits. But it was leftfielder
Megan Cummins who did the most damage. Cummins finished the day 2-or-4 with four runs batted in.
In game two against the Panthers, turnabout proved to be fair play as this time the Owls had the late rally for a win.
The W was held scoreless through the first six innings. Down 2-0 heading into its final at-bat, The W's Quimby drew a leadoff walk and moved over to third on
Riley Phillips' double. Cummins then singled through the left side, driving home Quimby and Cummins scoring on an error by the leftfielder to tie it at 2-2, with Phillips advancing to third on the miscue, as well.
Then with one out,
Anna Sandlin lifted a sacrifice fly to left that allowed Cummins to tag up and come home with what was the game-winning run.
The top three in the Owls' batting order – Phillips (3-4), Cummins (3-4) and Grisham (2-4) – had eight of The W's 11 hits in the game.
Grisham was the pitcher of record, as well. Grisham went 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and no earned runs.
