Box Score FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The 2022 Mississippi University for Women volleyball team appears to be intent on blazing new trails in the modern era of its program history. The Owls 3-2 win at NCAA Division II Miles College on Wednesday evening is their most recent evidence.
The W (5-4) topped the Bears (4-3) by set scores of 25-19, 14-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-14. It also marked MUW's second win over an NCAA II school in four days (the Owls defeated Lane College on Sunday in the Owls Invitational).
"I could not be more proud of how hard the girls worked to get this win tonight," MUW Head Coach
Halee Hensley said. "They fought for every point in that fifth set."
After the teams split the first two sets, the Owls earned a big win in the third. Tied at 7-7, MUW went up one on a side out. With junior libero
Maddy Suggs serving, The W would reel off seven-consecutive winning points and extend its advantage to 15-7.
But the Bears were undeterred and bounced back to win set four and send the match to a deciding fifth frame.
Neither team led by more than two points for the first two-thirds of the set. Down 8-10, a kill by
Zoe Hansen got MUW a point and the side out.
Llayne Skinner then knotted matters at 10-10 with a kill of her own that resulted in a Miles timeout.
The Owls upped their cushion to 12-10 on an ace by
Hannah Duran and never looked back.
Amonie Silas had the match-winning kill that made it 15-13.
Three Owls finished with double-digit kill totals led by Skinner's 14 kills and a .211 attack average.
Maggie Griggs had 12 kills and
Jasmine Kelly 10. Skinner also chipped in 12 digs, Griggs added a pair of aces and Kelly had three blocks.
Suggs capably handled matters in the back row with 27 digs. Setters Duran and
Camryn Johnson had 23 and 18 assists, respectively.
