Box Score COLUMBUS, Miss. - For the second time in less than a month, the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team lost to Covenant College, 3-1, in a close battle at Pohl Gym. The Owls (6-7) lost by set scores of 18-25, 29-31, 25-21, 25-27 over the Scots (3-9).
MUW also lost to CC on its home floor in the season opener on September 1.
While the match was statistically close in most categories, The W did emerge with dominating numbers in one aspect as it has in many matches this season: service aces. MUW rolled up 14 aces, compared to just four by Covenant.
The tandem of
Llayne Skinner and
Maggie Griggs led the way with six and 5 aces, respectively. Skinner also chipped in nine digs.
Griggs had another all-around solid performance, the team co-leader with 10 kills. She also made five digs.
Amonie Silas matched Griggs' 10 kills and had a .179 attack average. Teammates
Jasmine Kelly,
Micaela Hudgins each booked eight kills.
Hudgins was responsible for five the Owls' blocks in the match, all solo. Kelly added three solo blocks, accounting for all eight of MUW's blocks on the night.
Libero
Maddy Suggs had a team-leading 27 digs and also gave five assists.
The setter tandem of
Hannah Duran and
Camryn Johnson dished off 17 and 14 assists, apiece. Johnson contributed nine digs, while Duran had eight.
The going won't get any easier for the Owls in the near future, as they play a pair of back-to-back matches versus NCAA II schools. MUW travels to Ouachita Baptist on Monday and Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday.
