Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Mississippi University for Women softball had a slow start on day two of its spring trip to Myrtle Beach, losing to national vote-getter The College of New Jersey, 9-1, before a record-setting win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle, 21-4. The Owls improved to 9-5 overall with the split.
Versus TCNJ, things were never much in doubt as the Lions – who received votes in the latest NCAA Division III national poll – led 6-0 after four innings. An RBI single from
Taylor Palmer (1-2) in the top of the fifth put The W on the board.
TCNJ plated three in its half of the fifth to end the game by the eight-run rule.
Maiya Joe (1-2) had a double and leadoff hitter
Jessica Deming (1-2) a single to account for all three MUW hits in the contest.
Owls' starter
Baylee McWilliams (2-2) was knocked out after 1.2 innings of work in taking the loss. McWilliams allowed six hits and five runs (four earned).
Rylie Grisham threw the final 3.0 innings.
MUW appeared to have saved its offense for game two, setting a modern era softball scoring record with the 21 runs, besting the previous mark of 19 versus Concordia-Alabama in the 2018 season. The W banged out 15 hits, including three doubles and two triples.
The Owls team also proved to be rather larcenous against UMPI, setting a single-game record by stealing 15 bases (topping the previous mark of 10 versus LaGrange in 2022). Deming – who set the MUW season mark with 34 thefts in 2023 – tied the single-game record with four steals versus UMPI.
Deming also had a good game from the plate, going 2-for-2 with four runs scored and two walks to her credit. The four runs scored also matched the school game record, done six times previously.
Freshman
Brooklyn Wood had her biggest day as an Owl, going 3-for-4 with five RB and two runs scored. All three of Wood's hits were of the extra-base variety, with two doubles and a triple.
Joe was also 3-for-4 in game two, scoring three and driving in four others.
Riley Phillips had MUW's fourth multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 and scoring three runs.
Meanwhile,
Bailey McClellan (2-1) used the cornucopia of runs to notch her second win of the year. McClellan went 5.0 innings, struck out four and did not walk a batter.
The W will have an off day on Wednesday, before resuming action in Myrtle Beach on Thursday with two more game.
