Box Score COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W softball had mixed results again on the second day of The W Invitational, defeating Covenant College, 8-1, and losing to Millsaps College, 9-0, for the second time in as many days at Don Usher Field. The Owls are now 5-3 on the year.
 
Versus Covenant, pitcher Avery Byerley improved her personal record to 2-0 with a complete-game victory. Byerley was in control from the outset, permitting just two hits and a first-inning run to the Scots (0-4). She struck out three and walked just one, lowering her earned run average to 0.57 for the season.
 
The W's 13-hit attack was keyed by the senior combo of Emilee Slade and Riley Phillips, batting Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Both went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Slade drove in one run and Phillips two, including the game-deciding RBI in the Owls' half of the third.
 
Senior Anna Sandlin (2-for-3) and junior transfer Chloe McClain (2-for-3) also had multi-hit games. McClain had a double, scored a run and drove in two.
 
In the tournament finale versus Millsaps, what was a manageable deficit of 2-0 quickly ballooned at the end of the game when the Majors plated seven runs in the sixth and seventh, combined. That, along with the Owls managing just two singles at the plate, spelled doom for MUW.
 
Rylie Grisham (0-2) took the loss in the circle for the Owls. Grisham went 5.0 innings and gave up four runs. All four runs charged to Grisham were unearned, thanks to four errors by The W. She had two strikeouts and did not walk a batter, permitting three hits.
 
Bailey McClellan threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned). She also struck out two with no walks.
