BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The W track and field teams took their first steps into the 2026 indoor season on Saturday by competing at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Vulcan Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Despite being just coming off of the holiday break, the Owls posted several top finishes. Likewise, numerous efforts ranked among the top five performances on the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (SLIAC) leaderboard.
Heading that list was sophomore newcomer
Jarvis Sellers. Sellers, who also led the cross country team last fall, shattered the Owls' school record for the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:05.11 minutes. That bested the previous mark of 2:09.42 by Joshua Gonsalves, set on the very same track in 2023.
Sellers' time also put him in the No. 1 slot on the SLIAC 800m indoor performance list in the season's early going.
MUW men's teammate
Malachi Morgan produced a pair of top SLIAC efforts, including the No. 1 height in the high jump at 1.86 meters. Additionally, Morgan reached the finals of the men's 60-meter dash, where he placed eighth with a finals time of 7.10 seconds, which ranks No. 5 in the SLIAC, after running a 7.11 in the preliminaries.
The Owls' 60-meter hurdles trio of
Allen Fields (9.06),
Cortland Earl (9.08), and
Mikendall Morris (9.22) ran well enough to rank Nos. 2, 3, and 4, respectively, in the SLIAC rankings.
In other men's field events, Nicholas Martin went 12.30m in the triple jump (No. 5 in the SLIAC) and 5.62m in the long jump (No. 7 in the SLIAC). Adrian Brownwell Jr. had the SLIAC's No. long jump mark, with a leap of 5.65m
On the women's side, sophomore
Brooklyn Kelley picked up where she left off after her outstanding freshman campaign. Kelley registered two top marks in the SLIAC, for the shot put and weight throw at the UAB Vulcan Invitational. In the shot, in which she finished seventh among the largely NCAA I field, Kelley had a toss of 11.03m, good for No. 2 in the SLIAC. She followed that with a heave of 11.82m in the weight throw, ranking No. 3 in the SLIAC.
Hali Sinegal, also a sophomore, hit the No. 2-distance in the SLIAC for the triple jump with her leap of 10.43m, and also going 4.51m in the long jump for the No. 5 place among SLIAC competitors.
Freshman
Re'Niyah Irving got her Owls' career off on the right track, with the SLIAC's No. 4 times in both the women's 60-meter dash (8.39) and the 60-meter hurdles (10.49).
