JACKSON, Miss. – The W baseball team enjoyed one of those days when everything just seemed to go right, as it cruised to a 30-6 non-conference win at Millsaps College. The Owls (9-5) won their sixth game in a row, by dispatching of the Majors (6-9) at Twenty Field.
The first half of the bout gave no foreshadowing as to the conclusion. MUW built an 8-1 lead after 3 ½ frames, only to see Millsaps make it a competitive 8-4 score through five full innings. But in inning Nos. 6-9, The W could have used Miley Cyrus' song "Wrecking Ball" as its theme, scoring 7, 2, 8, and 5, runs in those final four at-bats, respectively.
The 30 runs were the second-most in a game in school history, behind only the 2025 total of 33 runs put on Fontbonne University on March 21. The Owls' 50 at-bats, 25 hits, and 28 runs batted in, all also rank second on the team single game list to the MUW totals against Fontbonne last season.
Individually, senior
Matthew Windham broke out of his mini-slump in a big way against the Majors. Windham went 6-for-8 at the plate, with two doubles, a grand slam home run, five runs scored, and seven runs batted in. He is the first-ever Owls to get six hits in a game and the eight at-bats tied the school record. Five runs scored was also a game record for MUW and his seven RBI rank No. 2 for a game.
In all, 18 different players took swings in the game for MUW with 12 collecting at least one hit. In all, seven players had multi-hit games versus Millsaps. Besides Windham's lusty totals, fellow senior
Zach Johnson was 3-for-4, with a double, RBI, and three runs scored.
Newcomer
Jay Marbutt also had three hits (3-5), including one double, to go along with two runs scored and an RBI, as well. His replacement,
Griffin Fuller, drew three walks.
Four players had two hits, including
Chase Marshall (2-2), who homered for the second time in as many games, giving him three for the year.
Baron Brack (2-4) had a double, two RBI, and scored twice, while his eventual replacement,
Elliott Turbyfill (2-3) scored twice with a ribbie. Speedy sophomore shortstop
Swayze Rikard (2-6) drove in three runs and scored three more.
The two teams flexed their pitching staffs, with a combined 18 arms utilized (12 by the Majors) for he night.
Joseph Gantt, the fourth of The W's hurlers, was given the win with 2.0 scoreless and hitless innings of relief. Millsaps' starter Dylon Lozano, the first of the Majors' egg-carton worth of pitchers, took the loss.
The W will next be in action on Friday, March 13, with a doubleheader versus perennial national power Aurora University, in Tucson, Arizona. The Owls will also face NCAA III No. 13-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.
