Softball Comes Up Empty in Day One of Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Mississippi University for Women's softball team played hard on day one of the Triangle Classic Softball tournament, but the Owls were unable to catch a victory falling 1-0 to William Peace University in an eight-inning game one and 12-9 to North Carolina Wesleyan College.

GAME ONE (L, 1-0; 8 innings)

The Owls match-up against Peace University was a battle of the pitchers. Both pitchers played well on the mound which caused the game to go scoreless for 7-innings

Madison Scoggin, left handed pitcher from Bay Springs, Miss., pitched the entire 7.2 inning game for MUW and was credited with her second loss on the season. The junior starter tallied six hits against, one unearned run, two walks, and four strikeouts. Scoggin threw 96 pitches of which 64 were strikes.

At the plate, Kandler Flora and Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson both swung for hits against the Pacer's defense. Wilkinson was also able to collect her third double of the season.

GAME TWO (L, 12-9)

The Owls started game two of the day strong with three runs scored in the top of the third. Katlyn Duke sacrificed herself on a left field fly to allow Anna Lloyd to score an unearned run. Carolyn "Kendall"  Wilkinson also delivered a sacrifice fly to allow Heidi Matthews to score and Brianna Duquette singled to right field to bring Kristen Martin home.

In the second, NCWC came back strong and kept the Owls scoreless in the top of the inning then returned with five runs in the bottom to pull ahead of The W 5-3.

In the top of the third, the Owls grabbed a fourth run on a fielder's choice that pushed Bailey Johnston on base and allowed Duke to score.

The Battling Bishops put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 9-4.

MUW kept fighting and scored two runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth.  However, the Bishops we able to an additional three runs in the bottom of the fifth to prevent the Owls comeback.

Wilkinson, junior infielder, led the Owls at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run. Other standout Owls were Matthews who went 3-for-5 with two runs and Duke who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.

UP NEXT
The Owls will take on Roanoke College and Averett University on day two of the Triangle Classic. The first game against Roanoke is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST/1 p.m. CST.
