Softball Misses Against the Crusaders, 8-1, 9-1

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W softball team was unable to get past in-state foe William Carey University on Tuesday, March 20 at Don Usher Field to drop both games of the doubleheader. The Owls struggled against the Crusader defense and was unable to stop their offense to fall 8-1 in game one and 9-1 in game two.

GAME ONE (L, 8-1)
The Owls defense held strong against the Crusaders during the first half the game to keep William Carey scoreless until the fifth inning. Getting ahead of its opponent, The W scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third on a single by Katlyn Duke.

After holding strong for four innings, the Owls defense faltered in the fifth and sixth inning to allow eight runs that resulted in The W's first loss of the day.

On the mound, Madison Scoggin fell to 5-5 on the season, pitching 4.1 innings for two strikeouts, three earned runs, and eight hits against.

At the plate, Bailee Watts had a 2-for-3 appearances while Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson collected two hits and Duke led the team with the only RBI.

GAME TWO (L, 9-1)

Despite fatigue from the first game, the Owls softball team was able to start game two off strong. The W defense kept William Carey scoreless for two innings while the offense recorded the first run of the game in the bottom of the second.

In the third and the fourth, the Owls defense scrambled against the Crusaders batters to allow four runs in one inning and five runs to secure the win for William Carey. 

Cara Hopper was credited with her fifth loss of the season on the mound. The senior pitcher took the mound for 3.0 innings for two strikeout, four earned runs, and three hits against.

At the plate, Heidi Matthews, Brianna Duquette, Kendall Wilkinson, and Kristen Martin all connected with the ball for a single hit each, Kandler Flora was credit with the only RBI, and Bailee Watts was credited with the only run.

UP NEXT
The Owls will return to their home Don Usher Field on Saturday, March 24 when they host Concordia College – Alabama in the 2018 homecoming game. The first pitch of the double header is scheduled for 1 p.m. Come out and support Owls softball.
