Softball Stalls Offensively at Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Owls played well defensively against NCAA Division III opponent Huntingdon College on Wednesday, March 20. The W prevented the Hawks from scoring in most of the innings but were unable to get started offensively to suffer a doubleheader sweep.

GAME ONE (L, 4-1)

The Owls scored one run in the top of the fourth inning, but The W was unable to put more runs on the board to close game one against Huntingdon 4-1 at Samford Complex Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks scored the game's first four runs in the first inning to complete their scoring effort in the top of the doubleheader. One run came in on a throwing error by the Owls shortstop, one runner came in on a throwing error by right field, and the final two runs were scored on a single.

Kristen Martin scored the Owls only run during the competition on a triple by Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson.

On the mound, Madison Scoggin was credited with the loss to fall 6-2 on the season. The senior lefthander pitched the entire six innings for eight hits against and four earned runs.

GAME TWO (L, 1-0)

Both teams played well defensively for a scoreless game until the fifth inning.

Huntingdon broke the seal in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on a triple to right center.

The Owls continued playing well offensively to close out the game but were unable to make a mark offensively.

On the mound, freshman Amelia Stalter suffered her second loss of the season. The right-hander from Atlantic Beach, Fla. pitched her third complete game for two strikeouts, three hits against, and one earned run.

During the effort, Anna Kate McDaniel, Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson, and Bailee Watts connected against the Hawks pitcher for a single hit each.

The Owls return home on Tuesday, March 26 when they host Division I foe Mississippi Valley State University in doubleheader action. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
