Women's Soccer Scores Season's Fifth Victory at Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – The Owls women's soccer team improves to 2-0 in overtime play and 5-1 on the season in a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Millsaps College on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Millsaps proved to be a tough opponent for The W, jumping ahead with an early goal with just eight minutes after kick-off. The Majors maintained their 1-0 lead well into the second half.

Despite being down, the Owls continued to play hard to out-shoot Millsaps 16-8 with two more shots on goal.

Senior Sarah Walden finally broke through with a goal at the 82-minute mark with the assist by Hannah Heustess to tie the game.

The first overtime passed by uneventfully with just one shot recorded by either team with Britain Welzien for The W attempting a header that was blocked.

But in the second overtime, the Owls delivered to clinched the victory. Walden scored her fourth goal of the season unassisted to give The W its fifth victory.

On goalkeeping duties, Sarah Gilliland played the entire 104:23 for the Owls to allow one goal with five saves.

To pair with her two goals during the match, Walden led the Owls offense with five shots, all on goal, for a game-high and Welzien came in at second with four shots and two saves.  

The Owls will look to keep the winning streak alive when they return to the field Friday, Sept. 13 when they are on the road again to Longview, TX to take on LeTourneau University. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
