Baseball Sweeps Southeastern Baptist to Open 2021 Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAUREL, Miss. – The W (2-0) swept both ends of a doubleheader Monday, beating Southeastern Baptist College 8-5 and 23-3 on the road.

GAME ONE
Trey Petite doubled, homered, and drove in a game-high of five runs to power The W to an 8-5 season-opening victory over Southeastern Baptist College on Monday afternoon.

Petite, a senior infielder from Loxley, Alabama, narrowly missed hitting for the elusive cycle, falling just a triple shy of the feat. He plated a run in five separate at-bats, including his first home run of the season.

The Owls (2-0) jumped on SBC right away, putting up single runs in the first and fourth and two in the second to enter the fifth inning up 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth, the Chargers scored their first run of the day to cut The W lead to 4-1.

The Owls answered with two additional runs, sixth and second, as SBC scored a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to close out the game.

Owls first baseman Damain Benefield and catcher Hunter Harper both had 2-for-4 outings but were unable to produce runs, while left fielder Reese Wagner went 1-for-3 to come home twice.

On the mound, redshirt junior Logan Suggs earned the win with game's start. The Columbus, Mississippi native pitched 6.0 innings for five hits against, five earned runs, and seven strikeouts. Luke Hobson entered the game in relief for the last inning for three hits against and one strikeout.

"[I am] really proud of the way our guys played tonight in both games, especially given the circumstances associated with the weather last week and limited practices," said head coach Matthew Wolfenbarger. "To be honest, I was surprised. Our pitching was good, [the] defense was solid, and our hitting was great. Anytime you have all three of those facets working in your favor, it's hard to get beat. We were able to give opportunities to multiple guys, and they took advantage of it. Once again, [I am] very proud of our guys."

GAME TWO

More story to come when stats become available.

The Owls will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 26, when they travel to Jackson, Miss., to face Tougaloo College in doubleheader action. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium.
