ATLANTA, Ga. – The W baseball team fell into a hole in the fourth inning and could not dig itself entirely out, falling 7-4 to Trinity Baptist College in the first game of the East Cobb Bash.
The Owls (5-2) struggled to find a way home, despite finding success at the plate. The W offense managed 10 hits in 35 at-bats but left 10 runners stranded on base.
Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the fourth, with TBC scoring three runs on a double and a single.
The W began to chip away at the Eagles lead with its first run in the fifth.
Heath Ford earned the RBI on a sacrifice fly that brought
Matthew Bumpous home. In the seventh, the Owls added a second run with
Trey Petite singling to allow
Blake Estabrook to score.
The 3-2 score did not last long. Trinity Baptist added three runs in the eighth and a seventh in the ninth.
The W attempted a rally in the bottom of the final inning.
Trey Petite landed another hit to send
Josh Tucker home, and
Damain Benefield received an RBI on a sacrifice to allow Bumpous to score his second run of the game.
Petite, a senior infielder, led the Owl offense at the plate. The Loxley, Ala. native made five plate appearances for three hits and two RBIs.
On the mound, senior pitcher
David Standifer pitched eight innings for the loss. The junior from Mobile, Ala., saw three strikeouts and six earned runs.
"
David Standifer did a nice job pitching for us," said head coach Matthew Wolfenbarger. "We just had some bad luck with the bats and wasn't able to produce when we got runners on. It's hard to win when that is going on, and the other team is playing well. Hopefully, having an experienced team as we do, we will be able to bounce back and play well tomorrow."
The W will return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 10, when they face Trinity Baptist in doubleheader action.
