COLUMBUS, Miss. – For the second time this season, The W swept Southeastern Baptist College with a pair of victories in Friday's doubleheader at CHS Baseball field. The Owls never failed during the four matchups this season and improved to 18-7 during The W's senior night.
"[I am] really glad to get two wins today on senior day!" said head baseball coach Matthew Wolfenbarger. "We were able to play all 15 of our seniors, and they all contributed! These guys have done a great job representing the program, and it's been a great experience serving as their coach!"
Game One (12-4)
The W jumped to an early lead with
Josh Tucker and
Blake Estabrook collecting RBIs on a single and a double in the second inning, respectively. A third run was scored in the middle of the two plays on a double play that allowed
Johndavid Birdsong to make it home.
In the fourth inning, Southeastern tied the game, adding three runs on the scoreboard.
The Owls broke the tie in the fifth on an RBI double from Birdsong and
Trey Petite added a third run on a bases-loaded balk. Estabrook advanced the Owls lead to 8-3 on a single that brought Tucker home.
The Chargers concluded their scoring effort in the sixth with their fourth and final run, but the Owls continued to rack up runs.
In the bottom of the inning,
Bobby Neal scored two RBIs on a double, John McGee scored Neal on a single, and a pop-up by
Matthew Bumpous allowed McGee to score.
David Standifer recorded the win on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings for seven strikeouts and three earned runs.
Game Two (8-6)
Southeastern Baptist struck first in game two, scoring a single run in the top of the second.
After three innings without scoring,
Damain Benefield broke the silence with a single for an RBI. Benefield then scored on an error by the Charger shortstop.
Tucker grabbed his second RBI on the day with a sacrifice fly to give the Owls a 3-1 lead going into the fifth.
SBC cut the Owls lead in the top of the sixth with a single run, but The W answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Bumpous collected an RBI on a single, Petite doubled for an RBI, Estabrook singled for 2 RBIs, and Benefield doubled to send Estabrook home.
The Chargers attempted to rally in the final inning, adding three runs, but it was not enough to thwart the Owls victory.
On the mound, senior
Brady Jones took the victory, pitching 6.0 innings for seven strikeouts.
As of now, the Owls next game is set for Tuesday, April 27 when they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to take on Huntingdon College. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
