The W Women’s Soccer falls to Louisiana College in opener

Box Score COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women women's soccer team found itself on the short end of the decision in its season-opening match versus NAIA scholarship program Louisiana College. The Owls (0-1) fell to the Wildcats (3-0), 10-1, at the Columbus Soccer Complex.

The W's senior goalkeeper Sarah Gilliland (Brandon, Miss./NW Rankin HS) was busy versus the high-octane Louisiana College offense. Gilliland had 10 saves in the contest.

The Wildcats, with no winning seasons in program history, have parlayed their move to the NAIA into an unbeaten start. LC out-shot the Owls – who are in the midst of their move to non-scholarship NCAA III status – 33-2 in the match.

The W found its lone goal off the foot of senior forward Shelby Harrington (Hattiesburg, MS/Oak Grove HS). Harrington tallied MUW's first goal of 2021 in the 81st minute of the match, unassisted.

Sophomore midfielder Leah Crabtree (Ocean Springs, MS/Ocean Springs HS) had MUW's other shot of the match.

The W will next be in action in an exhibition at NCAA II University of West Alabama on Thursday (Sept. 9/7 pm). The Owls will be at home this Saturday (Sept. 11), hosting Agnes Scott College. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Columbus Soccer Complex.
