Owls drop third straight on the road

Box Score MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After starting the 2022 season unblemished through its first four matches, the Mississippi University for Women women's soccer squad suffered its third-consecutive defeat – all on the road – dropping a 4-1 decision versus Johnson University at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex. The Owls are now 3-3-1, while the Royals improved to 3-5 on the year.

From MUW's perspective, the loss was made tougher by the fact that it out-shot JU by a 17-14 count. Both teams had 11 shots on-goal for the afternoon.

The Owls' quartet of Ardianna Parsons, Lizzie Truelock, Shelby Harrington and Lindsey Moyle each had multiple attempts to lead The W. Unofficially, Harrington had four attempts, with Parsons, Truelock and Moyle at three, apiece. Harrington and Truelock had three and two shots on-frame, respectively.

The two teams were at a 0-0 standoff for the first 20 minutes of the match, until the Royals netted the first tally of the day at the 20:03 mark. Three-and-one-half minutes later, however, The W's returning USCAA All-American Harrington punched in her second goal of 2022 in the 24th minute to knot the contest at 1-1.

The Royals' Anna Jo Mullins scored the first of her two goals to put Johnson University back on top, 2-1, in the 27th minute. That score held until the intermission.

In the second stanza, goals by the hosts in the 63th and 75th minutes widened the deficit for MUW. The Owls came out of the locker room ablaze – sending nine shots on goal in the final 45 minutes alone – but were unable to convert.

MUW goalkeeper Olivia Clark registered six saves for the day. JU net-minder Kaitlyn Pope stopped 10 Owls' shots.

The W will look to get back on track next Tuesday (Oct. 4) when – after several schedule shifts – the team will finally play its first home match. Kickoff versus Blue Mountain College will be at 7 p.m. at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex.
