Box Score GREENVILLE, Ill. – Mississippi University for Women saw its two-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win streak come to a halt at league co-leader Greenville University, 126-94. The loss dropped the Owls to 6-8 (2-5 SLIAC), while the Panthers upped their record to 10-5 (6-2 SLIAC).
MUW was not able to slow down the GU high-octane offense, which had 29 more field goal attempts than did The W. The Panthers' advantage was most evident from beyond the arc, where the hosts went 23-of-64, while the Owls were 2-for-7 from three-point range. But The W shot a better percentage overall from the field (55-to-41 percent) than did the Panthers, but it came down to volume.
Much of that disparity in possessions was due to a school single-game record MUW probably would have not set, by committing 37 turnovers as a team. Greenville parlayed those Owls' miscues into 37 points.
The W did hold a 58-47 advantage in rebounds. MUW also established a school single-game record for assists, with 36 "helps".
Four Owls' players finished the afternoon in double-digit scoring, led by senior
Brye Hopkins. Hopkins booked 22 point and shot an impressive 11-of-14 from the floor. Hopkins also collected six rebounds and made three steals.
Tarik Islamovic had his best day as an Owl by tallying 20 points. Islamovic hit 9-of-11 from the floor.
Cam Smith was close behind with 19 points, also having a nice shooting effort at 9-of-11. He also pulled down six rebounds.
Josh Dukes narrowly missed being a fourth double-figure scorer, finishing with nine points to go along with his seven rebounds.
Dariun Doss was held to four points, but contributed a game-leading nine rebounds.
"We came up here last year to experience how they play up close and thought that it would benefit us as it is truly unique," MUW Head Coach
Dean Burrows explained. "With that said, this game will forever come down to consistent disciplined habits and we did not have any of that here today. While what they do is to speed you up, 37 turnovers were not entirely forced by them. We threw the ball to the bleachers on several instances and couldn't play catch at times. Missing free throws is contagious and we didn't help ourselves there, as well.
"With all that said, hats off to Greenville as their guys stepped up in the absence of others for them, capitalizing on their opportunity and were far more the aggressor for 40 minutes, as evident by their offensive rebound number."
