LaGRANGE, Ga. – It may not have been like Sherman going through Atlanta, but The W men's tennis generated some firepower of its own in the state of Georgia, on its way to a convincing, 6-1, win at LaGrange College on Friday. The win evened the Owls' season record at 2-2.
With both of MUW's team losses coming in the fall versus LaGrange (5-2 and 4-3), a revamped Owls' lineup extracted a measure of revenge in the spring meeting. The W's domination began in the doubles matches, where the visitors swept the Panthers. At No. 1 doubles,
Jorge Ortiz and
Sandro Giangregorio tossed a 6-0 shutout. MUW's No. 2 doubles team of
Juan Garcia and
Marcos Fernandez, along with No. 3 doubles tandem of
Alvaro Bardales and
Ian Costabel, both cruised to comfortable wins by identical 6-3 scores.
LaGrange could only muster a win at No. 5 singles, as The W won the Nos. 1-4 bouts in straight sets. Winning was, in order, Ortiz (6-2, 6-2), Giangregorio (6-0, 6-4), Garcia (6-0, 6-1), and Fernandez (6-2, 6-1).
At No. 6 singles, MUW freshman
Jonathan Mitchell claimed his first collegiate singles victory, by toppling LaGrange senior Nic Bodin, 2-6, 6-4, 10-6.
