LOUIS, Mo. - The W men's tennis team has qualified for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) championship tournament, thanks to its runner-up finish in the UMAC South Division tournament on Friday. The No. 2-seed Owls defeated No. 3-seed Webster University, 4-0, in the semifinals and lost to top-seed Greenville University, 4-1, in a marathon championship match.
The UMAC conference tournament, a four-team tournament hosted at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, begins Friday, May 1 (semifinals) and concludes Saturday, May 2 (championship). The tournament champion will receive the conference's automatic qualifying bid to the 2026 NCAA DIII Men's Tennis Championship.
MUW made short work of the Gorloks in their semifinal bout. The Owls began by winning the team point in doubles. At No. 2 pairs, it was
Juan Garcia and
Marcos Fernandez winning, 6-2. At third doubles,
Alvaro Bardales and
Josh Cooper took a 6-0 win, with No. 1 doubles going unfinished.
The W then claimed the match win with three, straight-set singles wins. At third singles, Garcia won by a 6-0, 6-2 score. That was followed by wins at No. 5 from Bardales, 6-0, 6-3, and Cooper at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1. The balance of the singles matches went unfinished once the win was clinched.
Against No. 1-seed Greenville, the Owls and Panthers battled up and down the lineup. Two doubles matches went to tiebreakers and four of six singles bouts split sets.
MUW's lone team point came at No. 1 singles from
Jorge Ortiz Catala. Ortiz Catala won the opening set, 6-2, then was blanked in the second set, 6-0. He rebounded to win set three, 6-2.
