Owls Women’s Soccer rakes in USCAA post-season awards

PITTSBURGH, Penn. – Just days after making its second-ever post-season playoff appearance, the Mississippi University for Women women's soccer team had no less than five of its players receive honors from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), it was announced. Millie Mask (Nettleton, Miss.) earned the USCAA's prestigious Student-Athlete of the Year award, while Adriana Parsons (Springdale, Ark.), Molly Moore (Pascagoula, Miss.), Shelby Harrington (Hattiesburg, Miss.), and Loren Winters (Ocean Springs, Miss.) each earned USCAA All-American accolades.

Parsons and Moore were first-team all-Americans, while Harrington and Winters were second-team honorees. Harrington was a repeat winner as a second-team All-American, also earning the nod in 2021.

Mask is the second-consecutive MUW women's soccer player to earn the USCAA Student-Athlete of the Year honor. She joins teammate Layla Wilson, who won it in 2021. The Award recognizes academics and campus/community involvement, above on-field accomplishments

"Millie is a fantastic student-athlete," The W Head Coach Catie Lyles said. "She is always one who is willing to help and is there to support her teammates, on and off the field. I am excited to see what she will do in the future with her career and her life. I am thankful that she decided to join us two years ago. We are going to miss her being a part of our team, school, and program next year, but know that she will succeed in everything she has set out to do."

In the classroom, Mask ranks among the top-grade point averages in the entire MUW athletics department and earned her second USCAA All-Academic Team award in 2022. A Kinesiology major, she has been on The W Athletic Director's Honor Roll every term at MUW. Mask earned MUW's Presidential Transfer Scholarship and the Louise Dal Santo Kinesiology Scholarship. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Mask has already applied to physical therapy school after graduation. Her career goal is to become a Pediatric Physical Therapist.

Off the pitch, Mask is very involved in both campus and community activities. She is a resident advisor for the Mississippi School for Math and Science and is also a volunteer field trip chaperon for the school.

Additionally, Mask volunteers as a photographer for the Shine Foundation, an organization that serves children with special needs and their families. Mask also helps coach in a youth soccer league and works at other campus athletics events through the Owls' Team-for-Team initiative. She volunteers with the youth group at her home church (Liberty Baptist).

Despite missing three games due to an injury, Parsons – who came to The W from Springdale High School - ranked among the USCAA leaders in points (18/No. 9), goals scored (7/No. 8), assists (4/tied No. 8), and shots on goal (21/No. 8). Parsons had a .259 shooting percentage and a team-leading .778 shots-on-goal average.

"Adrianna was able to earn this and only play a portion of the season due to injury, Lyles added. "I am confident she will be back next year ready to play and be able to achieve this honor again. She is a great asset on and off the field."

Moore was a newcomer in 2022, joining the Owls via Resurrection Catholic High School and East Central Community College. Moore tallied four goals and four assists, good for 12 points. Moore led all of the MUW field players in minutes played (1,031).

Lyles cited Moore's willingness to move from a defender to a more offensive-minded position as key for the Owls. "Molly has been a great addition this year," Lyles reflected. "She has jumped into her new position and run with it. I expect more recognition for her next year, as well."

Harrington, a senior forward, netted six goals in her repeat performance as a USCAA All-American. She registered 13 shots on goal in 27 attempts (.481) and had one match-winning goal to her credit. "Shelby has been a great addition for the past three years," Lyles said of her senior. "She is a hard worker and this award is well deserved. We are going to miss her next year."

The Owls' fourth all-American winner was junior defender Loren Winters, new to the Owls' women's soccer team in 2022. Winters, also a standout track athlete for The W, was a key reason the squad limited foes to a minuscule 1.56 goals against average and just a .211 shooting percentage. Winters was key in her team registering a school-record five shutouts in 2022, as well.

"Loren is a solid defender and worthy of this recognition," Lyles added. "She plays hard and encourages her team. She has been a great addition to our program."
