Rhodes Ends Owls Winning-Streak in Midweek Doubleheader

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Owls softball team received its first losses of the season at the hands of Rhodes College on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The W played hard defensively but could not get the bats going until late to fall 5-0 and 10-5 in a doubleheader matchup.

GAME 1 (L, 5-0)

The Lynx had a solid offensive first game against the Owls with 14 hits against The W defense.

Senior pitcher Madison Scoggin recorded her first loss on the mound pitching 4.1 innings for four strikeouts, four earned runs, and nine hits against.

Ciara Steward entered the game in the fifth inning to relieve Scoggin on the mound. The senior left-hander pitched 2.2 innings for one strikeout, one earned run, and five hits against.

The Owls struggled to get their offense off the ground with only three hits in game one. Heidi Matthews, Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson, and Brianna Duquette recorded a single hit each while Matthews and Megan James were credited with a stolen base.

GAME 2 (L, 10-5)

The Owls got to a slow start in the second game of the day, finding themselves behind 4-0 in the top of the third inning.

In the bottom of the inning, The W was able to score its first runs on a single to centerfield from Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson for two RBIs.

The Lynx were able to put up another run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-2 but the Owls answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Rhodes all but sealed the victory in the seventh inning on a three-run homer and a single for two runs for a score of 10-4.

Kandler Flora scored the final run of the day on a pass ball for the Owls fifth and final run.

Freshman pitcher Amelia Stalter recorded her first loss of the season. The right-hander from Atlantic Beach, Fla. Pitched 6.1 innings for two strikeouts, 11 hits against, and nine earned runs.

Donna Douglas entered the game in relief in the seventh to pitch 0.2 innings for one walk and one hit against.

Wilkinson led the Owls at the plate going 2-for-3 in the effort for three RBIs. Bailee Watts headed the scoring effort also going 2-for-3 with two runs.

Up Next

The Owls will return to action on Saturday, March 2 when they host Copiah Lincoln Community College. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
