Owls Issue Sixth Shutout of the Season Against Penn State DuBois

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls softball team finds themselves back on top after a long break with back-to-back victories over Penn State DuBois on Monday, March 4. The W took both games of the doubleheader 6-0 and 11-1 to improve to 8-2 on the season.

GAME ONE (W, 6-0)

Senior pitcher Madison Scoggin is giving her best effort in her final year wearing the Owls uniform. The Bay Springs native pitched her fourth complete game of the season with a career-high 11 strikeouts. The left-hander pitched the entire seven innings with no walks and only two hits. Of her 74 pitches, 64 were strikes.

The W broke the seal on the game in the bottom of the first as Heidi Matthews scored on a wild pitch and Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson booted a sacrifice fly to center field to allow Bailee Watts to score.

The Owls added an additional run in the bottom of the second when Megan James scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.

The W completed its scoring effort with Emilee Watson scoring on a single by Anna Lloyd and Lloyd and Kandler Flora scoring on a single by Watts.

Watts led the Owls scoring effort with a 1-for-2 appearance for two RBIs and one run and Matthews and Lloyd led the Owls in hits with two hits each.

GAME TWO (W, 11-1)

The Owls bat caught fire in the second game against Penn State DuBois, striking for 11 runs on 10 hits in the 5-inning victory.

Senior pitcher Ciara Steward is still undefeated on the mound allowing only one run on one hit with one walk.

Freshman Donna Douglas entered the game in relief to pitch one inning for one hit against and two strikeouts.

Infielder Kendall Wilkinson and outfielder Kristen Martin had a great game at the plate, racking up three RBIs each. Wilkinson went 2-for-3 during her at-bats with one run while Martin went 1-for-2 also for one run.

Heidi Matthews led the Owls in scoring with a perfect 3-for-3 appearance to add three runs to the Owls effort.

UP NEXT

The Owls will return to the field on Tuesday, March 4 to complete the 4-game series against Penn State DuBois. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
