Box Score
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The curtain came down on what was arguably the best men's soccer season in Mississippi University for Women history, with the team's loss to Paul Quinn College (6-1) at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national championship tournament. The Owls finished 2021 with an 8-11 record - the most wins in a season for The W - and made the program's second-ever appearance in the USCAA championship tournament.
PQC improved to 9-6-3 on the year.
Perhaps fittingly, it was senior
Kyle Rodriguez – a Columbus native, graduate of Columbus High School and charter member of The W men's soccer program (started in 2017) – who would score his team's only goal of the match in what was his final career game sporting the Owls' colors.
Rodriguez converted a penalty kick at the 69:10 juncture of the match to cut the deficit to 4-1 at the time. It was the first goal of 2021 for Rodriguez, an All-American defender.
The Tigers came out of the blocks quickly versus MUW, scoring twice within the first five minutes of the match. The Owls relinquished another goal in the 11th minute to trail, 3-0. That score stood until the half. The W defense kept PQC in check the first 14 minutes of the second half, as well, before the Tigers would manage another tally that made it 4-0 prior to Rodriguez's goal for the Owls.
The W goalkeeper
David McCutchen was kept busy, facing 22 shots and earning 16 saves in the nets.
