Box Score 2 HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – Fighting to maintain their No. 2 ranking in the USCAA Coaches Poll, the Owls baseball team looked to quietly put away NAIA-opponent Rust College in a road doubleheader on Saturday. The Owls were victorious during the first half of the day to defeat the 13-2 in game one. In the second game, The W struggled to turn on base efforts into scoring opportunities for a 8-5 loss.
GAME ONE (W, 13-2)
Senior utility player
Logan Suggs started the game on the mound for The W four, his fourth win of the season. The Caledonia, Miss. native, pitched 6.0 innings for five hits against, two unearned runs, four strikeouts, and four walks.
At the plate,
Trey Petite once again led the Owls offense. The senior infielder hit two home runs on five plate appearances for two runs and five RBIs.
Damain Benefield,
Joel Estabrook, and Josh Turner also had successful at-bats to record two RBIs each.
Heath Ford led the Owls in scoring with three runs.
"We executed very well in all aspects of the game in game one, which led to us having a lot of success at the plate," Coach
Matt Wolfenbarger explained of the opening competition. "Many of our guys got hits, and
Trey Petite once again has himself a day with two bombs in game one.
Logan Suggs pitched another good game to improve his record, and
Luke Hobson did a nice job closing the door in the last inning."
GAME TWO (L, 8-5)
Senior pitcher
Brady Jones received his first loss of the 2021 season to bring his record on the mound to 4-1. The Louisville, Miss. native pitched 4.1 innings for seven hits against, eight runs (four earned), one strikeout, and one walk.
Joel Estabrook entered the game in relief to allow three hits against, no runs, with one strikeout.
Offensively,
Blake Estabrook and
Hunter Harper collected two RBIs for The W. Harper Hunter had a 2-for-4 appearance, including one triple to have one of the most effective at-bats.
"This game just didn't go our way, but we battled back and made it a close game," said Wolfenbarger. "
Brady Jones pitched well. They had a few key hits that led to multiple runs early for them. We kept chipping away but just couldn't score enough to get the victory."
The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday, Aug. 6, when they host Stillman College. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m.
